Definition / Scope

The solar power industry in India is all set to establish itself amongst the topmost industries in India. With installed capacity of 136,697 MW, the solar industry has witnessed a record growth of 35 percent worldwide.

Recently, the Renewable Energy Policy Network (Ren21) designed for the 21st century, has put India among the top 5 nations of the world that have Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology capacity. With current solar capacity of only 2600 MW, India has targeted to produce at least 100 GW of solar energy by the end of the year 2022.

It is known that India can be generating 1.5 times of its total demand for electricity by just producing 1000 GW of solar energy. For this amount of energy to be produced, India only needs 0.5 percent of its land, or half the desert district of Barmer in Rajasthan.
